Two City of Savannah parking garages are located within one block of the theatre. These events bring in an average of more than 1,000 people per week. The Savannah College of Art and Design's support has made it possible for the Lucas Theatre to present top-line entertainment including opera from London and Italy, European orchestras, country stars, traveling repertory companies and film series. They began a 14-year campaign and completed a $14 million restoration and the Lucas Theatre's grand reopening was in December 2000. A group of concerned citizens pooled their resources and bought the building and created the Lucas Theatre for the Arts Inc.

In 1986 the owners obtained a demolition permit and made arrangements to turn the once-thriving Lucas Theatre into a parking garage. But none of the ventures were successful, and the building was slated for demolition. Lucas Theatre The Lucas Theatre closed in 1976 after a deserted screening of "The Exorcist." After the closing in 1976 the building was converted to a dinner theatre and a comedy club.
RESTAURANTS IN VICINITY OF LUCAS THEATER IN SAVANNAH INSTALL
It was the first building in Savannah to install air conditioning in 1923, making the balcony a welcome retreat during the sultry summers. The Lucas quickly became a favorite venue for movies and touring vaudeville acts. For Pizza and sandwiches, mellow mushroom is on Liberty between Bull and Whitaker maybe 2 blocks away. As I said earlier, my enjoyment of this theater has been long standing.and I am looking forward to many, many more performances in this “Grand Old Lady” of this South. The theater’s grand opening event was a screening of “Camille” on the largest screen at that time in Savannah. Re: Restaurant near Savannah Theater 13 years ago Save McDonough's is right across the street, they have pretty good bar food and a separate restaurant upstairs. The staff of the Lucas were so gracious and caring to and for me. So his name did not stick with me.And for that, I am so very sorry I didn’t get all of my “ducks in a row” ! Contact - Address - Hours & Website Phone: 9Address: 32 Abercorn St., Savannah Georgia 31401 USA Hours: Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. The house lights were down and the intro to the music and introductions of the featured sololists had begun. And, after my “wounds” were taken care of and I was seated, the director of the Lucas(or at least I think he was) came upstairs to check on me.MUCH to my embarrassment, I did not catch his name. They provided first aid.but more importantly to me, the care and concern was SO generous and so real/authentic. Truly an accident, with no one at fault!!!! But, the immediate attention provided me by multiple staff members of the Lucas was outstanding. The architectural trappings, the wonderful acoustics, the grace and beauty of an old building that has survived and actually blossomed into a place which is and should be loved.īUT, aside from the obvious, the wonderful music and performances, and the wonderful setting.this isn’t the foremost, the most important aspect of my review.Īs my friend and I were making our way upstairs to our balcony seats, I slipped on the marble steps and became to center of attention with abrasions, the prolific oozing and bloody kind, from my elbow to wrist on my arm. The point I’m making is that this venue is truly amazing. many, many was truly great.BUT, we have also enjoyed multiple performances in balcony seats “way beyond” the front row. My husband and I had fortunately, front row seats in the balcony. In fairness, over the last 30+ years, I/ we have enjoyed “box seats”.raised/elevated along the right and left sides of the theater.and on numerous occasions, the balcony seats. The Lucas is a wonderful theater which has been renovated.I think, to it’s original grandeur.the decor was brought back to its initial design, the seating is quite comfortable and there really doesn’t seem to be a bad seat in the theater. The concert was outstanding and the venue, once again, was absolutely wonderful. I joined a friend for an evening of “dinner and a concert”.a performance featuring brothers who are outstanding musicians of “ stringed” instruments and performing with the Savannah Philharmonic.
